One Machine. One Cycle.
Automatic Tapping Machine for Chamfer + Drill + Tap in One Cycle

Every Slugger automatic tapping machine completes three operations sequentially in one automated cycle — eliminating the manual process switching that causes inconsistency and downtime in conventional production setups.

1
Step 01
⬦
Chamfering
The entry edge of the hole is chamfered to the specified angle and depth. This removes the burr from the drilled hole, provides a clean lead-in for the tap, and eliminates a separate deburring operation that would otherwise require manual handling or a separate machine.
2
Step 02
🔩
Drilling
The tap drill hole is bored to the precise diameter and depth required by the thread specification. Servo-controlled feed ensures consistent depth and prevents drill wandering. Cutting fluid is automatically applied to the drill zone throughout the cycle.
3
Step 03
🔧
Tapping
The thread tap advances at the correct pitch-feed rate, cutting a full-depth internal thread. PLC depth control prevents over-tapping in blind holes. The spindle reverses automatically to withdraw the tap, and the completed part is ejected or indexed to the next position.

Why Custom — Not Off-the-Shelf
Custom Automatic Tapping Machines vs Standard Tapping Machines
Slugger Tools custom automatic drilling and tapping machine — PLC servo controlled built to customer drawings Shenzhen China

Off-the-shelf automatic tapping machines handle a generic part envelope. They are designed for universal application — which means they are optimised for nothing specific. For parts with unusual geometry, multiple thread positions, combined operations, or tight cycle time requirements, a standard machine will always leave efficiency on the table.

Slugger builds machines designed around your specific part. We receive your component drawings, design a custom machine that fixtures your exact part, performs all required operations in the most efficient sequence, and delivers a system with cycle times that a standard machine cannot match.

This is not a modified off-the-shelf unit. We design and fabricate from scratch — frame, spindle configuration, PLC program, fixture, coolant system, and guarding — as a complete engineered solution.

  • Built to your part drawings — not a generic configuration
  • Free engineering design and 2D/3D drawings before commitment
  • Single, dual, and multi-spindle configurations
  • Rotary index, linear transfer, or single-station layouts
  • PLC and servo controlled — touchscreen interface, parameter storage
  • Automatic loading/unloading with vibration bowl feeder available
  • Uses our own HSS spiral point taps — matched tooling from the same factory

Machine Configurations
We Build Every Configuration

Every machine is custom — but these are the most common configurations we build for production customers. Tell us your part and volume and we’ll recommend the right layout.

⬛
Single-Station
1 part per cycle · Low to medium volume

One part loaded, chamfered + drilled + tapped in sequence, ejected. Suitable for parts with complex geometry or large physical size. Cycle times typically 8–20 seconds depending on thread and material.

⬛⬛
Multi-Spindle
Multiple holes per part · Single cycle

Multiple spindles tap 2–8 holes simultaneously in one downstroke. Ideal for parts with multiple tapped positions — flanges, brackets, housings. Eliminates repositioning time between holes.

🔄
Rotary Transfer
Continuous production · High volume

Hydraulic or cam-driven rotary index table with multiple stations — load, chamfer, drill, tap, eject happening simultaneously on different parts. Highest output, lowest cost-per-part. Vibration bowl feeder for auto-loading.

➡️
Linear Transfer
Inline production · Long parts

Parts indexed along a linear track past multiple processing heads. Suitable for longer workpieces or where rotary index geometry does not work. Common in automotive component lines.

Standard Capabilities
Automatic Tapping Machine Specification Range

Every machine is custom — these figures represent our standard capability envelope. We regularly work outside these ranges for special applications.

Buyer Questions
Common Questions About Custom Tapping Machines
How do I get a custom automatic tapping machine built in China?
Send your part drawing to Slugger Tools — email or WhatsApp. We provide free machine design including 2D/3D layout drawings. Once approved, we provide a fixed-price quotation. No payment required during the design phase. Start here →
What is the lead time for a custom tapping machine?
Standard custom machines: 30–60 days from order confirmation to factory dispatch. Complex rotary transfer or multi-station machines: 60–90 days. The engineering design phase (free) typically takes 3–7 days before quotation.
Can the machine handle both through holes and blind holes?
Yes. Single machines can be configured with both through-hole and blind-hole spindles. Blind hole depth is PLC-controlled per spindle — adjustable from the touchscreen without mechanical changes. Spiral flute tap holders are used for blind holes to prevent chip packing.
What is the advantage of buying taps and machine from the same supplier?
When Slugger designs your machine, we spec the tap holders and tooling for our own HSS taps — dimensionally matched, verified during factory acceptance testing. This eliminates compatibility issues and means all technical questions about tooling and machine go to one contact.
Do you offer installation and training at our factory?
Yes. We can send an engineer for on-site commissioning and operator training at your facility. Alternatively, remote video installation support is available. All machines ship with complete documentation including PLC program backup so your maintenance team can support the machine independently.
What materials can the machine tap?
Our machines are configured for the specific material of your part — aluminium, mild steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, cast iron. Spindle speed and feed rate are programmed for the material. For stainless steel, we specify M35 cobalt taps. For aluminium, we use forming taps where appropriate.
FAQ
Automatic Tapping Machine Questions & Answers
An automatic drilling and tapping machine performs chamfering, drilling, and internal thread tapping in a single automated cycle. The operator loads the part, the machine completes all operations, and the finished part is ejected. No manual tool changes, no process switching, no repositioning. Designed to replace the combination of separate drill press + tapping arm or bench tapper that most production shops use.
Yes — a multi-spindle machine can have each spindle configured for a different thread size. For example, a valve body with M8, M12, and 1/4 NPT ports can be completed in one cycle. Spindle speeds are set independently per head. For frequent changeover between different parts, we design quick-change tooling systems.
We can configure machines with torque monitoring sensors in the tap holders. If torque exceeds the programmed limit (indicating a broken or overloaded tap), the machine stops, triggers an alarm, and displays the fault on the HMI. This prevents damaged parts from continuing down the production line. Tap change access is designed into the machine for minimal downtime.
Yes. We run a full cycle test using your actual parts (or approved samples you ship to us) before the machine dispatches. You can witness this in person at our Shenzhen factory, or we conduct it via video call with real-time streaming. The acceptance test includes: cycle time verification, thread quality check (go/no-go gauge), depth accuracy measurement, and 100-part continuous run.
To design and quote your machine we need: (1) part drawing showing thread positions, sizes, and depths; (2) part material; (3) required production rate (parts/hour); (4) whether holes are through or blind; (5) any space or power supply constraints at your factory. We can work with a photo or sketch if a formal drawing is not available yet — we will create the design drawings ourselves.
For hex nut, flange nut and coupling nut production, a dedicated nut tapping machine with vibratory bowl feeder is the most efficient solution. The bowl feeder sorts and orients nuts from a bulk hopper, feeding them to the tapping station automatically. Typical output is 2,000–5,000 M8 hex nuts per hour on a single-spindle machine. Multi-spindle versions process 2–4 nuts simultaneously for higher volumes.
Yes. We configure machines specifically for stainless steel tapping: servo rigid tapping (synchronised feed eliminates compression chuck float), M35 cobalt taps, sulphurised cutting oil delivery to the tap zone, and speed set to 7–12 m/min. Torque monitoring detects overload before tap breakage. This configuration is essential — standard pneumatic tapping arms and general-purpose machines have high tap breakage rates in stainless.
Our standard range covers M3–M30 metric (coarse and fine pitch), UNC #6–1″, UNF, BSP 1/8″–1″, and NPT pipe threads. A single machine is typically optimised for one thread size and material. Multi-spindle machines can tap multiple different sizes simultaneously on one part in a single cycle.
A single automatic tapping machine with bowl feeder replaces 2–4 manual tapping operators for the same output. At 2,000–5,000 pcs/hr automated versus 200–400 pcs/hr per manual operator, the labor saving typically returns the machine investment in 8–18 months depending on production volume and local labor rates. We provide a payback calculation as part of every quotation.
